Which Eyeliner Technique is right for you?

Eyeliner tattoos can be done in a couple of different ways. The most conservative approach is an “eyelash enhancement”or Lash line tattoo. It is called eyelash enhancement because it tattoos only the base of the lash line to give the illusion of fuller lashes. This technique is minimal and a good fit for any eye shape or size. We can always add some shading at the second session to provide more fullness and a smudged or smokey look. This gives the eyeliner a thicker appearance without looking too bold and harsh.

The more dramatic eyeliner technique is a shaded wing. This creates a beautiful winged eyeliner, but the shading keeps it soft and subtle. This technique is best for large, open eyes with tight skin, and eyes with little wrinkles. You cannot tattoo a wing over wrinkles because the creases will make the wing bend and look crooked. Winged eyeliners are not suitable on hooded eyes.

All three eyeliner techniques are subtle and nothing will completely replace bold makeup. Eyeliner makeup sits on top of the skin, so it has a dark, bold appearance while tattooed eyeliner is going underneath the skin, so it is much lighter and softer. Even black tattoo pigment will never look as dark as black eyeliner makeup. The healed result can replace daily eyeliner for those who wear minimal or prefer a more natural eyeliner. If you are used to wearing rich, black liquid liner every day to create a wing, then think of the eyeliner tattoo as a nice base for you to trace your makeup and save time, however, you may still find yourself wanting to wear makeup on top of the tattoo to darken the appearance.

Because the tattoo heals very soft it is not recommended on dark skin because not much of the tattoo will be visible.

We do not offer any lower eyeliner tattoos. The water line is not able to be tattooed so the lower liner ends up giving a droopy appearance to the eye.

You must be off any eyelash growth serums (Latisse, Lash Boost, etc.) for at least 6 months before having your eyeliner tattooed. These serums make the eyelid very sensitive and prone to bruising. If the skin bruises too much the pigment will not enter the skin due to swelling. You cannot be wearing eyelash extensions or contact lenses during your appointment. Minor swelling is normal and will subside within a few days. No eye makeup can be worn until flaking is complete (5-10 days) to prevent infection.

Who cannot receive cosmetic tattoos?

Those who are pregnant, nursing, HIV positive, have certain immunodeficiency disorders, have been on Accutane or chemotherapy in the past year, are hemophiliac, or have eczema/rosacea on the tattoo area. Autoimmune diseases will require a doctor’s note of approval. You must be off any lash growth serums six months before your procedure. If you get cold sores and desire a lip tattoo, you must get a prescription of Valtrex to take beforehand to eliminate the risk of an outbreak. No eyelash extensions or contacts can be worn during eyeliner tattoos.
